Adult Family Homes (AFHs)

Adult Family Homes are residential homes licensed to care for up to six residents. They provide room, board, laundry, supervision and necessary help with the activities of daily living, personal care and social services. The goal of AFHs is to provide skilled, nurturing care that delivers the highest possible quality of life in a familiar residential setting. An AFH is run by a Residential Manager and 1-3 certified caregivers (NAR). A WA State Licensor, usually a Registered Nurse (RN), is assigned to each home and reviews the patient care and facility condition every year.

AFHs must specialize in one of the following: Dementia, Mental Health (like depression or schizophrenia) and Developmental Disability in order to provide care to individuals with the mentioned conditions.

Pros:
For those wanting to maintain a familiar home-like environment, AFHs are perfect. Some AFHs are owned and managed by registered or practical nurses and provide skilled nursing care along with an excellent resident to healthcare professional ratio averaging 1:3. The price of the home is reflected by the needs of the client and the quality of the facility. AFHs are usually about half the price of a nursing home with comparable or better care.
